CPI participation at the UN GAID Global Forum 2008

During May 18-22 2008, several UN affiliated events took place at the convention center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The CPI was represented by Unit Manager Mohamed Fathy at the UN GAID Global Forum 2008, the World Congress on Information Technology 2008 and the GKP Forum on Social Entrepreneurship.

The UN GAID is one of the major strategic partners of the Cyber Peace Initiative.  The UN events resulted in a good opportunity for the CPI to network with key players in the development and technology field.

The Global Forum on Access, Connectivity and Innovative Funding Mechanisms had a practical, result-oriented format, including interactive, multi-stakeholder panel discussions, partnership announcements, as well as opportunities for participants to showcase their ICT development projects to potential partners and donors.

Held once every two years, the World Congress on Information Technology is a premier global ICT forum that brings together global leaders in business, government and academia. It impacts global economic and social development through the exchange of policies and ideas on technology. WCIT 2008 incorporated a three-day congress to address global impact issues, a Link Program for business matching, an ICT exhibition, a debate on current ICT issues and ancillary activities.

An array of interesting sessions was held, one of them being the session on Innovative funding for ICT4D. During this session, it was recognized that knowledge intersects all MDGs and is key to the empowerment of people, without which development would not be possible. The session underlined the importance of involvement of the youth demographic in ICTD4D and innovative learning strategies in the classroom. Furthermore, it addressed the need for content localization, the use of local languages on the internet and training at local levels.

The GKP Forum on Social Entrepreneurship focused on social innovation and entrepreneurship as a means to combat youth unemployment and poverty while generating social, economic and ecological value that will help achieve development goals.
